The Power of Pennies

"We are collecting money for Haiti because of the earthquake. We are going to mail it all the way to Haiti in a big plane. When the earthquake came, all their buildings crashed and people lost their homes." This quote comes from 6 year old Paden Huntz, who immediately knew that he wanted to help the suffering people of Haiti. After a devastating earthquake struck the country, Paden and his friends came together and decided to help the people who were in need. They came up with a plan similar to penny wars, which our school participated in! Catholic schools everywhere are sending money to Catholic Relief Services, who is sending out food, water, and emergency shelter to more than 700,000 people.

Make a Wave- Demi Lovato & Joe Jonas

The video "Make a Wave" starring Disney's Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas premiered on Disney Channel March 15. This video inspires me to keep our Earth and oceans clean. This video says that we are all responsibile for what happens to our Earth in the long run. It's says that the smallest things we do could affect the Earth, good or bad. I love this video, because it shows so many beautiful things God created and how we should protect them.

The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers

Dignity is the most important thing a person needs. It gives them pride, and appreciation . A persons dignity is their lively hood, it shows everybody who they are and what they do. The rights of the workers are also important, if the rules were unfair they would perform less well than if the rules were fair. These quotes basically sums it up, “What should move us to action is human dignity: the inalienable dignity of the oppressed, but also the dignity of each of us. We lose dignity if we tolerate the intolerable.” "Dignity in humans involves the earning or the expectation of personal respect or of esteem. It is the respect and honor associated with an important position, or self-esteem."

The right of the working man and woman should never be undermined, but always appreciated. Because after all we do make everything happen, we are the core of every operation, we are workers. Without us there would be no McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Walmart, schools, buildings, or business's'. We make the world go round and still make it home in time for dinner. We should be the most valued people and the most appreciated for all that we do.

Call to Family, Community, and Participation

This catholic socail teaching teaches us that families are the center of our faith. The human person is sacred and family life should be suported by government. People have rights like to take part in society. Families have the right to seek the common good together and be active in our society. Dictionary.com say a family is a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not. Our faith tells us we need to protect human life and dignity.

"From the dignity of the human person, there also arises the right to carry on economic activities according to the degree of responsibility of which one is capable. Furthermore--and this must be specially emphasized--the worker has a right to a wage determined according to criterions of justice, and sufficient, therefore, n proportion to the available resources, to give the worker and his family a standard of living in keeping with the dignity of the human person. In this regard, Our Predecessor Pius XII said: "To the personal duty to work imposed by nature, there corresponds and follows the natural right of each individual to make of his work the means to provide for his own life and the lives of his children; so fundamental is the law of nature which commands man to preserve his life."

Option for the Poor and Vunerable

As christians we are called to serve the poor. By helping the poor, we help the whole community. We must show as much care as Jesus did to people who are vulnerable. The Church fels like we should stand:) by the poor to help them care for themselves. we can have a good community if we help the people who don't have as much as we do. The poor are the people who need to be treated the most in our society. They have a specail place in the Catholic Social Teachings. As catholics we need to answer to the needs of people but the poor are the people who need the most help. .

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains: "Those who are oppressed by poverty are the object of a preferential love on the part of the Church which, since her origin and in spite of the failings of many of her members, has not ceased to work for their relief, defense, and liberation through numerous works of charity which remain indispensable always and everywhere.
Pope Benedict XVI has taught that “love for widows and orphans, prisoners, and the sick and needy of every kind, is as essential to [the Church] as the ministry of the sacraments and preaching of the Gospel”

Dignity of a Human Person

Recently there has been a lot of contreversy on is it right to do abortion. Many people say that it is wrong, others say its their choice. Well the catholic social teaching says that it is wrong to that. Here is a quote on the subject "...this Council lays stress on reverence for the human person; everyone must consider one's every neighbor without exception as another self, taking into account first of all life and the means necessary to living it with dignity, so as not to imitate the rich man who had no concern for the poor man Lazarus."

So now is the big decision, is abortion wrong? In my personal opinion I would say yes. The dignity of a human person is also giving him a chance to live to do something in the world. Mother Teresa said it best when she said “
If we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people to not kill each other? Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want.” We can stop abortion through everybodys help. We can stop the violence.

Care for God's Creation

One form of showing God respect is respecting what he created. As Chrisitans we are called to protect our planet, and by protecting out planet we are helping our future generations. It is important for us to care for our Earth now, so our children will be lucky enough to have a home just like we did when we were children. Many people in our society are set on reducing, reusing, and recycling. This is not only an Earth Day slogan, but something that our faith calls us to do.

"But the progress of science and the inventions of technology show above all the infinite greatness of God, Who created the universe and man himself. He created all things out of nothing, pouring into them the abundance of His wisdom and goodness, so that the holy psalmist praises God in these words: O Lord our master, the majesty of thy name fills all the earth. Elsewhere he says: What diversity, Lord, in thy creatures! What wisdom has designed them all! God also created man in His own image and likeness, endowed him with intelligence and freedom, and made him lord of creation, as the same psalmist declares in the words: Thou hast placed him only a little below the angels, crowning him with glory and honor and bidding him rule over the works of thy hands. Thou hast put all under his dominion."

Rights and Responsibilites

The Catholic Social Teaching "Rights and Responsibilities" teaches us how the rights of humans are protected. Each and every human has a right to live their life and we also have a right to have the things that allow us to live a decent life. These things include shelter, food, education, health care, freedom of religion, ect. With these things come responsibilities. We all have responsibilities whether it's a family, school, or a daily job. To achieve a successful, healthy community, we must not only care for ourselves or our family, but also our community. When we all come together and care for one another the society we live in today becomes a better place!

It is agreed that in our time the common good is chiefly guaranteed when personal rights and duties are maintained. The chief concern of civil authorities must therefore be to ensure that these rights are acknowledged, respected, coordinated with other rights, defended and promoted, so that in this way everyone may more easily carry out their duties. For 'to safeguard the inviolable rights of the human person, and to facilitate the fulfillment of each one's duties, should be the chief duty of every public authority.'”

Solidarity

Many of us have at one point and time gone with the crowd and have made fun others. Maybe you didn't think about how the other person might feel, I know I have. The most important thing in our community is solidarity. For those of you that don't know what solidarity is, it's the connection between all of those in the community. It's support in every way, its the love that makes us so close. It's not leaving out, but bringing in everybody. Even that person you don't like as much, to get out of your bubble of insecurity and self consciousness and reach out to those who you don't like as much.

Do you get it? Do you get why we need to be together, and to be a big family. If you live out this teaching you will find great happiness in life. Most people don't find this out until its to late, but in todays soceity we have the internet. We can spread this wonderful word and bring everybody to the light.
